The beta notice.
For now this page carries the notice LawAngel's testers accept in Word before they start: what LawAngel stores, where, for how long and who can see it.
Beta notice This is the notice LawAngel's private beta shows its testers in Word, word for word (version 2026-10-26). It is not a privacy policy.

How LawAngel handles your data
LawAngel is in a private beta. This notice says plainly what it stores, where, for how long and who can see it. It also covers the changes arriving in the next few updates, so you only need to accept it once. It is not a privacy policy or terms of service; those will follow before LawAngel is generally available.
Your documents and questions
- When you use a feature, what it needs (your question, the open document or the relevant parts of it, and any files you attach) goes from Word to LawAngel's server, and from there to an AI model that writes the answer.
- The AI model is run by a third-party provider, which may keep or use what it receives under its own terms. Limiting LawAngel to providers that keep nothing is planned before general availability. Until then, bear this in mind before working on material your client has not agreed may be processed by AI services.
- The AI is given everything it may need to help you, including people's names, ID numbers and addresses and your notes in a matter. LawAngel does not remove personal details before the AI sees them; Redact is a tool you can run on a document yourself.
- When an answer searches LawAngel's South African law library, your search question is sent to a third-party search service. When web search is on, search terms drawn from your question go to a web search service, and results can come from any country.
- Dictation uses the speech recognition built into Word's browser, which may send your voice to that browser maker's service.
What LawAngel's server keeps
- Your account: email address, a scrambled form of your password that cannot be turned back into it, your name, your firm and any names it trades under, your role and practice area, and the product code you signed up with.
- When you sign in, and from which internet address and browser.
- Your work, so it opens on any computer: your Assistant conversations, your Reviews, the results of the tools, which side you act for in each document, and your settings. A Review is kept until you delete it, use "Delete all my reviews" in Settings, or delete your account. When you first open a version that keeps these on the server, what was kept on this device is moved there and then deleted from the device.
- PDFs you attach in the Assistant, kept with that document's conversation so they are not sent again with every question, and deleted after 30 days unused, or with the conversation or your account.
- Conversations, Reviews, attached PDFs and matter files are stored encrypted with a key kept for your account.
- What the Assistant picks up from your chats, which may include details of your clients and matters as well as your working preferences, and anything you import from another AI assistant. You can see and delete it in Settings, or switch it off.
- Feedback you choose to send: your vote, your comment and what you rated.
- Reference documents you add to your library, until you delete them. If you connect CaseLines, your CaseLines sign-in details, stored encrypted so LawAngel can sign in for you.
- Court bundles you send to CL & Split, stored encrypted (apart from short-lived working copies while a bundle is processed) and deleted within 7 days.
- How much you use each feature: counts, sizes, timings and cost.
Matters
- A matter keeps the files of one case or transaction together, so LawAngel can use them when you work on its documents.
- Files you add, and the notes, answers, conversations and parties (people, companies and properties, with their ID or registration numbers, addresses and your notes) you save to a matter, and the Review of each of its documents, are stored on LawAngel's server in Germany, encrypted with a key kept for your account. Files can use up to 5 GB together, and one file can be up to 1 GB.
- LawAngel reads each file so the AI can use it: its text, a short summary and a search index are kept with the matter. When you ask about a document in a matter, the passages that best match your request, any files you pin, and the matter's parties with all their details and your notes on them go to the AI with your question.
- From a South African ID number, LawAngel works out the date of birth, the age and the sex registered with the number, shows them with the party and gives them to the AI. Where a document says something different, it is shown as something to check, never as an error.
- This is a test version of LawAngel. To help you and to fix problems, the LawAngel team may look at what is stored in your matters. Each time they do, it is recorded with the reason.
- Do not add a client's documents to a matter unless your client has agreed that they may be stored and processed this way. Use your own test documents otherwise.
- You can delete a file or a whole matter at any time. A deleted matter stays in the trash for 30 days; then it and everything in it are deleted for good.
Where, and for how long
- LawAngel's server is in a data center in Germany.
- Usage records are kept for one year, sign-in records while your account exists, and your work and the records described below until you delete them or your account. Encrypted backups of the server's database are kept for up to three months.
Who can see it
- This is a test version of LawAngel. To run the beta and fix problems, the LawAngel team can see everything described here: your account, your work, your matters and their files, and a full record of every request to the AI (what was sent, including the document and any passages, what the AI worked out and answered, the tools it used, how long it took and what it cost), together with what you did with the results, such as accepting or rejecting a change. That includes any personal information about your clients or other people in that material, such as ID numbers. Each time the team opens your data, it is recorded with the reason.
- This applies to the test versions of LawAngel only. The version for paying customers will not give the team this access.
- No one else is given access to it, apart from the AI and search services described above and the company that hosts the server.
Your choices
- Do not use a client's real matter unless your client has agreed that it may be stored and processed this way, including being seen by the LawAngel team during this test. Use your own test documents otherwise.
- Delete a conversation, a Review, a file or a matter at any time; Settings can delete all your Reviews at once.
- See, delete or switch off what the Assistant remembers in Settings.
- Sign out to remove your session from this device.
- To have your account and its data deleted, or with any question about this notice, contact the LawAngel team through the beta testers' group.
