About LawAngel
What is LawAngel?
An assistant for South African lawyers inside Microsoft Word. It reads the document you have open, answers questions about it and about South African law with the passages it relied on, reviews contracts and court papers, and drafts. It proposes changes as tracked changes and comments, and nothing it proposes changes the document until you accept it. The home page says what it does today.
Does LawAngel give legal advice?
No. LawAngel is a tool for lawyers, not a law firm. What it writes is for a lawyer to check before relying on it, and its answers name the passages they rely on so that you can.
Where does LawAngel find the law?
In its own library of South African law, which holds the Constitution, Acts, regulations, rules of court and by-laws among others, and on the web when it needs to, linking each source it uses. A case citation in an answer is checked against South African sources, and LawAngel says which citations to check yourself.
Which Word does it work in?
Microsoft Word on Windows and on a Mac. LawAngel opens in a pane beside your document, from Word's Home tab.
Getting LawAngel
How do I get LawAngel?
For now LawAngel is in a private beta. The lawyers testing it get their account and LawAngel for Word from the LawAngel team. To ask for access, write to LawGuru's team through LawGuru's contact page.
How do I sign in?
Inside Word: open a document, choose Open LawAngel on the Home tab, and log in with your LawAngel account's email and password. This website has no sign-in of its own; how to sign in has the steps.
Can I see it working first?
Yes. LawGuru shows firms LawAngel on their own kind of documents: ask for a demonstration on LawGuru's software page.
Your work and your data
Where is my work kept?
On LawAngel's server, in a data center in Germany, so it opens on any computer you sign in on. Conversations, Reviews, attached PDFs and matter files are stored encrypted with a key kept for your account. You can delete a conversation, a Review, a file or a matter at any time.
Can the LawAngel team see my work?
During the beta, yes. To run it and fix problems, the team can see testers' work and a full record of every request to the AI, and each time someone opens your data it is recorded with the reason. The beta notice explains this in full.
Can I use LawAngel on a client's matter?
Only if your client has agreed that it may be stored and processed this way, including being seen by the LawAngel team during this test. Otherwise, use your own test documents.
How do I report a security problem?
